Hair Care Buffalo, NY: Healthy Hair Starts from the Inside Out

hair care in Buffalo NY

Now that we’ve taken care of your scalp, it’s time to shift our focus to your hair itself.

At Elysian Salon in Buffalo, NY, we believe beauty has always started from the inside — not just how you look, but how you feel, how you live, and how you care for your body. And that’s exactly where we’re starting: from the inside out.

Genetics

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your genes are set in stone. They determine what you’re given: thick hair, fine hair, curly hair, straight hair, dense hair, or sparse hair. We can all wish for what we weren’t born with, but the smartest (and healthiest) approach to beauty is learning to accept and work with what you have — because it’s uniquely and beautifully you. Once we accept that, we can focus on what you do have control over.

The Inside Factors That Affect Your Hair

Your lifestyle plays a huge role in what’s happening on top of your head. Some of the biggest contributors we see in the salon are: hormones, medications

water (both intake and the water you shower in — a whole separate blog!), diet and

sleep.

Your body is incredibly smart. It uses essential vitamins and nutrients to keep your vital systems running first. Hair, skin, and nails? They get whatever is left over. If there’s not much left to go around, it’s often a good idea to support your hair with a quality hair, skin, and nails supplement. (We always recommend chatting with your stylist or healthcare provider to find what’s best for you.) Once you’ve addressed what’s happening internally, then it’s time to focus on the outside.

Your Hair Care Routine: What You Actually Need

No matter your hair type, having the right options in your shower makes all the difference.

Your Core Shampoo Lineup

Ideally, you’ll have:

A scalp-focused shampoo - Used weekly to keep your scalp balanced (unless your scalp is extremely dry or oily — in which case your stylist can guide you).

An everyday shampoo - Chosen specifically for your hair type: fine, medium, thick, straight, curly, dry, or color-treated.

A Word About Clarifying Shampoo: Clarifying shampoos are everywhere on social media right now. Like many beauty trends, they’re often pushed into overuse — causing dryness or damage — and then suddenly labeled “bad.” Don’t worry, something else will replace it soon enough.

Here’s the truth: Not everyone needs a clarifying shampoo Clarifying shampoo is not a solution for oily scalp (see our scalp care blog for that). Clarifying shampoo can be helpful if you: use a lot of styling products regularly and swim often. If that’s you, having a bottle in your shower won’t hurt — just use it no more than once a week. If you don’t fit into those categories, you can skip it altogether.

Conditioners: Yes, You Need More Than One

Ideally, you’ll have:

Everyday Conditioner - Choose one based on your hair type and texture for regular use: fine, medium, thick, straight, curly, dry, or color-treated.

A “Weather” Conditioner - The weather plays about 70-90% of the role in how your hair behaves. If your hair frizzes in humidity → go for a *smoothing conditioner**

If your hair feels dry or static in winter → choose a *hydrating or moisturizing conditioner**

Deep Conditioning Mask or Conditioner - If your hair is: dry, color-treated, heat styled, highlighted or balayaged.( A deep conditioning mask is a must if you are any of .the above listed). Use it as needed — weekly, biweekly, or whenever your hair feels like it needs extra love.

Styling: Protecting Your Investment

You can do everything right — great products, healthy routine — but overusing heat will undo all of it. Whether your hair is colored or virgin, the best mindset is always:

less is more. If you can skip heat styling for a day, do it. Let your hair air dry. Be kind to it.

If you have highlighted or balayage, investing in high-quality heat tools is essential. Better blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons protect the integrity of your hair and help preserve your color and condition.

The Bottom Line

Yes — it’s a lot. Beauty routines can feel overwhelming. But once you build good habits, everything becomes easier. And those habits set you up for: healthier hair, easier styling and more consistent good hair days.

And that’s always the goal.

We strive to give you the best hair care in Buffalo,NY
